Women are the majority in veganism and this may be related to patriarchy

Veganism is gaining more and more strength in several countries around the world.

In the UK, in 2016, the Vegan Society found that twice as many women as men follow veganism. And that's not just in the UK, statistics have shown that 79% of people who claim to be vegan in the United States identify themselves as women.

But what could explain this different behavior between genders? The arguments in favor of veganism only lead us to believe that this philosophy should have more adherents among men, since it provides a series of environmental and health benefits, in addition to avoiding animal cruelty.

According to the IPCC report, consuming fewer products of animal origin should be a habit adopted by the whole society, not only because it is a practice of compassion for animals. But also, according to the report, strict vegetarianism reduces the emission of gases the greenhouse effect, environmental degradation, and the risk to food security.

Another study, published in The Lancet, concluded that the production and consumption of food of animal origin must be drastically reduced to avoid millions of deaths and catastrophic damage to the planet.

Being a vegetarian can still result in a longer life:

Yes, that is true! According to a study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. According to the survey, carried out by professionals at the Seventh-day Adventist University of Loma Linda, in the United States, those who are strict vegetarians (who only eat vegetables and fungi, as is the case with vegans) have a 15% lower risk of death, while those who are ovolactovegetarian (who have a diet based on vegetables, eggs, milk and products derived from them) have a 9% lower risk of death than people who eat meat.

Other studies have also found that, in low-risk populations, adhering to a vegan diet reduces the risk of cancer in general.

Older research suggests that a strict vegetarian diet can still lessen asthma symptoms. But does not stop there. A review of 25 studies concluded that a diet with a reduction in animal products contributes to reducing the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Also, those who consume fewer animal derivatives are less exposed to pesticides. An analysis showed the greater presence of pesticides in the breast milk of omnivorous women about vegetarians, which can be explained by the fat-soluble characteristic (ability to mix with body fat) of the pesticides, which bioaccumulate in the animals' bodies - which consume feed produced with pesticides - and, later, in humans.

Regarding environmental benefits, reducing the consumption of meat and animal products would reduce the pressure on agricultural land.

In one hectare of land, for example, it is possible to plant 42,000 to 50,000 tomato plants or produce only an average of 81.66 kg of beef per year. Thus, a strict vegetarian diet stimulates the reduction of deforestation.

Water savings are also quite significant since to produce one kilo of soy (which is a source of complete protein), 500 liters of water are spent, while for one kilo of beef, 15,000 liters are needed.
