Kratom is a new popular organic substance really popular with the general population for its stimulant and sedative properties. Kratom is also commonly known as Thang, Krypton, Kakuam, Thom, Ketum and Biak-Biak. With this blog we will discuss about the chemical properties of Kratom and some benefits and effects of Kratom intake.
What is Kratom?
Kratom or scientifically known as Mitragyna speciosa is a tropical evergreen free from Southeast Asia and is native to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Kratom, the original name used in Thailand, is a member of the Rubiaceae family like coffee and gardenia. Kratom is generally consumed by smoking, chewing or putting extracts in capsules or boiling with tea. Kratom can cause different effects depending upon the dosage of the substance. Small dosages can lead to stimulation and opioid-like depressant and euphoric effects occur at higher doses. It is considered to be very helpful for treatment of withdrawal from opiates and pain relief.
Traditionally, kratom leaves have been used by Thai and Malaysian natives and workers for centuries. The stimulant effect was used by workers in Southeast Asia to increase energy, stamina, and limit fatigue. However, some Southeast Asian countries now outlaw its use. In the US, this herbal product has been used as an alternative agent for muscle pain relief, diarrhea, and as a treatment for opiate addiction and withdrawal.
What does Kratom Do?
According to FDA research, kratom is an agonist that attaches itself to the mu-opioid receptors. This is the same part of the brain that is activated when one takes opioids, like prescription painkillers or heroin. Kratom is actually a natural opioid. It’s thought that mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine may help control pain by attaching to proteins called opioid receptors and, in turn, reducing pain perception.
The results of a recent online survey found that kratom users in the United States tend to be middle-aged, middle-income people living with pain.
Benefits or Effects of Mild Kratom Intake:
Small doses of kratom are proven to give a stimulant effect. Kratom is also classified as a stimulant drug. The user can feel more awake, alert, social, and talkative. It’s worth noting that kratom leaves from different parts of Southeast Asia have varying levels of mitragynine. Malaysian kratom leaves have a much lower concentration at 12%, compared with 66% for Thai kratom leaves which results in different effects from different types and doses. Kratom can be a boon for people with social anxiety as it can help you relaxing and adjusting to the social norms with ease.
Although there are many claims regarding the benefits of Kratom, there is very less research about the effects and benefits of using Kratom. It is really important to start the intake with less doses or less strong strain and go increasing gradually if you wish once your body grows use to it. All in all kratom is an organically available product with many great benefits which results in less dependence on other opioids.
